Daredevil: Brutally dark superhero action

Daredevil is an Netflix original superhero drama, which serves as the first installment in a planned series of shows, featuring Marvel’s cinematic universe’s street heroes such as Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist etc. “Daredevil” follows Matt Murdock, attorney by day and vigilante by night. Blinded in an accident as a child, Murdock uses his heightened senses as Daredevil to fight crime on the streets of Hell’s Kitchen, New York after the sun goes down.

The series Daredevil couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. When comic and superhero fans were itching for a dark toned, TV-MA rated superhero show. Well Daredevil delivered, giving us realistically brutal fight scenes, lots of blood and a darker feel than most superhero movies and shows. Daredevil is very well produced. It’s awesome costume design, cinematic tone, good editing and good writing made it much better than the 2003 ‘Daredevil’ movie. I wasn’t such a fan of its cinematography and visual effects. It could get a little bit too dark at times, which gives viewers a disadvantage during fight scenes if they’re watching in standard quality.

The characters in this Daredevil series are deeply written. All with backstories and motives. Villain Wilson Fisk, a.k.a Kingpin is introduced as Daredevil’s arch enemy, and you’ll just love the way is character is written. He’s definitely one of the most brutal, vicious and motivated antagonist you’ll ever meet. In season 1 Daredevil is faced with the challenge of dismantling Wilson Fisk and his empire. But while the alter-ego tries to take down Fisk, Matt Murdock, his long time friend Franklin Nelson and new aquatint Karen Page tries to manage and operate a law-firm. The premise of Daredevil is quite common. The whole ‘Guy have special abilities and decides to dress up in a costume and fight organised crime in a city being taken over by criminals’ shouldn’t be new to anyone but the show takes a deeper, darker look into this premise.

Wilson Fisk’s absence from a majority of Daredevil season 2 made the season less compelling than it’s first. But i’d say season 2 is on par with the production value, toning, and cinematography. But was a bit sloppy on the writing. We saw Daredevil sharing the spotlight with 2 other Marvel heroes, and even though the show is titled ‘Daredevil’, the actually hero felt like a sidekick to Punisher’s better written plotline and character development in season 2. Even so, both seasons of Daredevil are a must watch.
